Adobe unveiled Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 software for smartphones, smartbooks, netbooks, PCs and other Internet-connected devices, allowing content created using the Adobe Flash Platform to reach users wherever they are. A public developer beta of the browser-based runtime is expected to be available for Windows® Mobile, Palm® webOS and desktop operating systems including Windows, Macintosh and Linux later this year. Public betas for Google® Android™ and Symbian® OS are expected to be available in early 2010. In addition, Adobe and RIM announced a joint collaboration to bring Flash Player to Blackberry® smartphones, and Google joined close to 50 other industry players in the Open Screen Project initiative.

There had been varied rumors had been flying around for a few days before this FOTB’09 that that we would be able to check some sneak peaks at this year’s Adobe keynote, and that’s exactly what happened. Richard Galvan and Mark Anders, “Senior” Principle Scientist at Adobe, were back again this year with an update on the Flash platform and a sneak peek on Flash CS5 and the new Flash Mobile features. YES, IT IS FLASH CS5.

Marc Anders started off by going over the current platform situation and Flash Player 10 installs continue to impress. New figures due out shortly will put the coverage at over 90%. Mark used some community demos to run through features in the Flash Player 10 and AIR runtimes. 

Flash CS5

Richard Galvan gave first sneak peak of “Viper” Flash Professional CS5. The big news for developers is that Flash authoring finally gets integration with FlashBuilder. If you’re using Flash CS5, a new FlashBuilder project can be created from Flash CS5 through a new export dialogue.

It should be a direct sequel to the G1, and has all the features like multi-touch HVGA screen, accelerometer support, GPS, Compass, WIFi, 5 MP camera, Android Webkit Browser, and now with having Adobe Flash makes for even more very rich mobile web user experience.

Adobe has a good a really good press release which explains in detail. They also have made a good video where the Adobe Platform team explains some of the features of the Flash implementation on the HTC Hero device.   According to Mark’s blogpost, it’s possible to view up to 85% of online video through the Flash Player, supports latest Flash Lite 3.1 supports streaming audio capabilities, as well as support for around 80% of Flash content on the web today through the device’s web browser. On this device, double clicking Flash content (games, ads, etc) brings it fullscreen mode, which seems to work very much intuitively: Demo of Flash on the HTC Hero (an Android device).

What version of Flash is this? Well, right now it’s Flash Lite 3.1 according to Adobe.  However, there have been prior public announcements that Flash 10 is coming to Android (by as soon as end of this year), as well as other mention of other SmartPhone platforms like webOS, Windows Mobile, & Symbian for starters down the lane.  Mark says that the HTC Hero has Adobe Distributable Player.  My lateral thought would be that, they (HTC) may upgrade the device at some point later (whether that means Flash Lite 3.x or Flash Player 10 can be anyone’s guess).  Here are few words from Adobe: Serge Jespers, Mark Doherty.  Here are some of the interesting comments from the Peter Elst & Dale Rankine of flashlite community.   With now over one billion devices running Flash, and Android represents a nice (open) platform in which Flash to grow, develop and play.  This new HTC Hero device represents the true mobile (web) experiences possible and I think we’ll see much more devices in the future.

He has included not only the latest handset specs (including very latest 5th edition devices such as the 5800  & N97), but also some Maemo devices, namely the N800, N810, and N810 WiMax (which support a Flash 9 browser plugin)

It’s a very  useful resource for flashlite community, since the information in Adobe Device Central can sometimes be still (particularly if you don’t get ADC updates), and Bill has put in more information in his post, such as hardware support such as GPS, touch screen, rotation features, and even software feature support such as video support, S60 Platform Services and OVI Store support too.  This is one should appreciate in his efforts in putting all the updates in one place in go.

Forum Nokia has posted a Flash Lite 2.x Components for Mobile Development. Go download it !!

“This package provides components for Adobe Flash Professional 8 and Adobe Flash CS3. The package includes mobile components for status indicators (device battery charge and signal level) and a general list component. The components can be further customized with custom graphics and parameters”

The good news for for us developers  like me, who has added Flash .swf files to page is they don’t have to make any chances to the page code at all. The work will be handled by the spider programs from Google and Yahoo that crawl Web sites.

Better Search Results in a Flash enabled websites

For end users, it means more relevant search results, according to Justin Everett-Church, senior product manager for Flash at Adobe. “The perfect page for you may have been out there, but it was all Flash content, so it had low search ranking. This will mean it will have a high ranking.”

The problem for search engines finding Flash-based pages is due to the dynamic nature of Flash, and pretty much any Web runtime, said Everett-Church. A HTML file is a flat file with links, while a Flash .SWF file has various states. Based on user interaction, you could go to different parts of the Flash file.

When a search spider reaches a HTML page, it goes through the tags but discards SWF file references. With this new indexing method, when it finds an SWF file, it passes the job off to an optimized search program to examine the SWF file’s contents.

For example, say a Web site is full of links to other pages, but instead of using a hotlink, they have the user click on a Flash button. Standard search crawlers would discard this, but the new crawler will be able to follow the button’s logic and look at the link behind it.

“Google has been working hard to improve how we can read and discover SWF files,” said Bill Coughran, senior vice president of engineering at Google, in a statement. “Through our recent collaboration with Adobe, we now help website owners that choose to design sites with Adobe Flash software by indexing this content better. Improving how we crawl dynamic content will ultimately enhance the search experience for our users.”

Google will be going live with the new SWF indexing technology this week, while Yahoo plans to release it at an undetermined point in the future, according to Everett-Church.

He expects this change will have a bigger churning on search results. “There is so much content out there that has been indexed but not to the thoroughness that was possible,” “It will take a while for Google to spider all the .swfs out there, but as it goes you are going to see a big effect. One is that there will be more search results, and the ones higher up will be the ones with the great experience you’d expect with a Flash app.”

I am sure you will like it and find interesting. One thing is for sure, I cannot work on MS Paint, rather I can do effortlessly either in Adobe flash or even Photoshop.

Adobe Big Boss Shantanu Nayaran during the a conference call today, said, “We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone,” adding, “We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can develop an iPhone Flash player ourselves.”  Now Steve Jobs cannot shirk giving way in iPhones.  Also Adobe firmly believes that the Internet is a barren wasteland without Flash, and with the iPhone being the number one choice of discerning consumers for a mobile internet experience, Adobe wants to do something about that.
