Where Are The Device Central Updates ?

February 7, 2010 Manikantan 2 comments

It has been quite a long time since Adobe Device Central got device info update. Today, unable to find few targets devices on my Device Central CS3, I went to the Adobe site and was sad to see the last Device update released for

CS3 – was on 18th June 2009 (Update 9); and

CS4 – was on 25th June 2009 ( Update 4).

Over the past seven months easily 20 + devices with Flash Lite have been rolled out by Nokia alone and easily 50+ Flash Lite devices would have been shipped.  It would be really nice if there was an update released or if someone tells me if I am missing some means to update my device library.

Blessed New Year 4 ya ‘ll!!!

On behalf of the Flashactions team (myself and Krishna), we wish all readers a happy, healthy and prosperous year of 2010. May Flash on the iPhone, Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR for mobiles and forthcoming versions of Flash Lite shower opportunities and money to its developer base in this year. May Flash development become easier via Adobe CS5 Suite.

May there be peace in the world !

Guys!! My Off-Topic Other Than Adobe flash. Both Are Very Close To My Heart…….

December 25, 2009 krishna Raj Comments off

Hello all,

This is an off-topic blogpost which is very very close to my heart, yes its about animal welfare.  I have been saving  and protection, taking care of many birds including sparrows, falcon, snakes, dogs, cats and many small animals, and ofcourse lots of cattle heads from slaughtering with fellow minded folks since last decade where I was farming (It was my first profession before Adobe Flashing :P) in outskirts of  Mysore, India.  Even now in my home in Hyderabad, I do have coupla bird nests hooked to my spiral staircase to my roof tops and my electrical meter reader box.  Yes :P .

Very recently, I found very interesting animal welfare organization in Vishakapatnam aka Vizag namely Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals.  VSPCA is a sanctuary for cows, dogs, cats, turtles, horses, buffalo, many kinds of birds and other small animals. They work mainly in the city of Visahapatnam and its surroundings areas, as well as a growing number of districts in Andhra Pradesh. The number of animals that they rescue, treat and advise others about is increasing each year – So please help them financially or in any kind you feel good to continue to help these animals.

Using Bing translator API in Flash Lite

December 24, 2009 krishna Raj 1 comment

Introduction

This article describes the usage of Bing Translation API in your Flash Lite client. This application can translate between international languages using the Bing translation engine (version 2.2) provided by Microsoft. Bing Translator (previously Live Search Translator and Windows Live Translator) is a service provided by Microsoft as part of its Bing services which allow users to translate texts or entire web pages into different languages

The author recommends reading google translator API article before this article. Both articles have lots of similar characteristics.

Outline

Here are the keys steps -

1. Request a Bing API Key from Bing site. As any API key it is used to track the request for service or in simple terms, it is an identifier of the requesting party to Microsoft.

2. Understand the various types of communication method available to communicate with the server. This can be found at the site http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877872.aspx They are of three major types – JSON, XML, SOAP.

3. Process the result obtained.

Making the Request

I have already discussed how a JSON based client has to be implemented in Flash Lite in google translator api article. SOAP type of webservices are simple to implement with the webserviceconnector component. In this article, we focus on how XML implementation is done. Before beginning to code the XML usage of the API, we need to understand the request is made as a query and the return is of XML type.

In order to request for data in the XML mode, you can use the loadvars() function in Flash

lv.load("http://api.bing.net/xml.aspxAppId=XXXXXX&Query="+toTranslate+"&Sources=Translation&Version=2.2&Translation.SourceLanguage="+src_lang+"&Translation.TargetLanguage="+dest_lang);

Here, toTranslate is the sentence to be translated ( after escape() ), src_lang and dest_lang are source and target languages respectively.

Result Processing

In addition after some testing I found that some further processing of text was needed after unescape(). Quotation marks, apostraphe characters has some trouble in getting rendered. Hence I had to handle it myself as follows.

function process(ip:String):String {
	while (ip.indexOf("'") != -1) {
		var arr:Array = ip.split("'");
		ip = arr.join("'");
	}
	while (ip.indexOf(""") != -1) {
		var arr:Array = ip.split(""");
		ip = arr.join("\"");
	}
	return ip;

}

In order to handle the receipt of data, you will need to write a onData function that processes the incoming XML data structure. Parsing an XML tree is again quite simple and to conclude creating a translation engine client is quite simple in Flash Lite.

New Game Design Contests

November 18, 2009 Manikantan 1 comment

Via Forum Nokia post, I came to know about the MoMinis mobile game contest. Of course, IMGA is also open and accepting submissions :)

MoMinis

Getting back to MoMinis, the game rules are  listed here and requires you to use the Mo’ Minis studio tool for game engineering.

Whereas, at the prestigious IMGA contest, you can build your game on / for any mobile platform like java or Flash Lite or anything deployable into a phone.  And remember that IMGA is analogous to Holy grail :) The biggest game development competition and hopefully I have my game ready by then.
